It all starts with a tiny seedling....
GIVE A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GROWING
- You may have seen the heartbreaking images on newspapers
and television. On February 17, 2006, a
mountain collapsed, burying alive an entire village in Leyte, Southern
Philippines. Earlier, another village in Quezon province, also in the
Philippines, was washed away by floods killing thousands. In other parts of
Asia, the same tragedy is happening, albeit on a smaller, less dramatic
scale.
That, experts have determined, is because of massive rape of what once
were lush forests. There were no trees to hold the soil and water – so the
mountains tumbled down and water rushed to populated areas.

- Why would you be concerned if you do not live in the
Philippines? Aside from concern for fellow human beings and helping those
who do not have what we have, scientists have demonstrated the amazing
"butterfly effect" in nature -a butterfly flapping its wings in China can
cause a hurricane in Florida a year later. Tiny changes can cause
significantly different results in huge distances.
Which village will be next? It is not a matter of IF but when and where.
UNLESS – we do something quickly.
Asian Leaders
Association will lead a tree planting project in villages in Quezon City,
Novaliches, Laguna and Marinduque province in the Philippines. It will not
solve the entire problem – but it is a small step in the right direction.

Aside from their critical role in preventing floods and mudslides,
· Trees are the "Lungs of our Planet". Trees continuously recycle carbon
dioxide into oxygen.
· Trees can heal the sick. 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from
rainforest ingredients. More than 2,000 tropical plants have been identified
with the potential to fight cancer.
·Trees protect our future. Trees are vital for a healthy, livable planet.
You must protect and save this vital source of life.
GIVE A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GROWING
Flowers will fade. Chocolates will melt. A tree lives for a very long time.
A tree is not only a special gift to yourself or a loved one . It is a
special gift to the entire world.
In a few weeks, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Mom
probably does not need another blouse and Dad does not need another tie. Give them a
gift that keeps on growing and saving lives. Mom and Dad will be proud of
you. My own parents will not be around but I will give a few trees in their
memory. I wish they would see those beautiful trees with their names on
them. My friend gently tells me, "Who knows? Maybe they will". If not, I will get satisfaction just
from having done it.
Or perhaps a loved one is celebrating a birthday, marking an anniversary, an
achievement, a retirement. Give a tree instead of a card. Or maybe you have
a relative or friend in the Philippines you would like to send a gift to.
This is a living gift that gives lasting recognition to the person and
involves them in a partnership of renewing the forests for the benefit of
the world.

will be too small. Every bit of help counts. A tree will be planted in any
of the 4 locations above by ALA members on your behalf. A tree marker with
the name of the person to whom you are giving the gift will mark the tree. A
beautiful Certificate of Planting and a Gift Card with your personal message
in it will be sent to the person you are honoring.
